How to cut a live mouse in two. How to arm (or protect) Snow White. How to cut the throat of a rose.
A special edition of the bizarre, how nine artists chose to play with our most valued cultural icons. They raise questions about our greatest myths, touching common grounds such as nature, war and crime.
TALENTS#2 proposes a selection that uses humour, surprise, even madness and slapstick. A discourse emerges, accusatory, denunciatory, yet subtly and incredibly light.
We smile at "Flower Serial Killer" and "Carlitopolis", are seduced by "I Like to Think" and "Velvet Cell", yet remain perplexed by "From the Civil War" and "Snow White". We witness the dissolution of an ancient myth in "The Unicorn", feel powerless faced by the alienation of "Down-Slow" and insidiously threatened in "Empire".
Produced with Cube, the center for digital creation of Arc de Seine in Issy-les-Moulineaux.

FLOWER SERIAL KILLER

– 2000 / 00:03:00'
FLOWER SERIAL KILLER

Flowers Serial Killer tricks us for a moment into believe we're watching a snuff movie, then, turns the tables on the viewer so they become the Peeping Tom. In this film, innocent roses are tortured and executed freely. According to the artist, "the amplification of cruelty by the method" is meant to juxtapose and be ironic and critical of our time period. The theme of flowers as martyrs is masterly summarized through the spirit of this "artist-surgeon", who is, at the same time, fun and daring.

I LIKE TO THINK

– 2004 / 00:08:00'
I LIKE TO THINK

Richard Brautigan, a cult poet of the Sixties declames "All watched over by machines of loving grace. While reciting his poem the cybernetic universe turns into a paradise of rhythms and images of a virtual world that has become our reality.
Yet, this reality is an ideal universe governed by machines. The film is a movie-poem and metaphor for a spectacle of the senses.

CARLITOPOLIS

– 2006 / 00:03:00'
CARLITOPOLIS

Carlitopolis is about a student in plastic arts whose end of the year project is being show to a jury. In the film, a little laboratory mouse called Carlito is used toperform all sorts of experiments. This trivial scenes become absurd and misleading with a mixture of real images and special effects that lead us to doubt the authenticity of the visuals. How does one perceive what is real and what is false?

THOMAS HICKS

VELVET CELL

– 2005 / 00:03:10'
VELVET CELL

In the "Velvet Cell", we dive into a dark and twisted eco system half man, insect and the dark fauna of an imaginary world in constant motion. Hicks paints a staggered portrait of a chaotic infrastructure like an ants colony. It's a disturbing trip, where the atmosphere is confining, suffocating, weird and poetic.

DE LA GUERRE CIVILE

– 2004 / 00:04:00'
DE LA GUERRE CIVILE

Toys posed on a table are partaking in private discussions as a hand tears them away and repositions them abruptly. The aggressive gesture is in tempo with the text of Jean Michel Espitallier and the music of Fabrice Coulon. The images follow one after another depicting the smashing of: war, destruction, video games, death. In this comedy of "musical butchery", we confront the virtual war, which is available for us only through the outlet of the media.

BLANCHE NEIGE EPISODE 1

– 2004 / 00:13:00'
BLANCHE NEIGE EPISODE 1

Deprived of their ability to be used as a consumption tool, a group of Snow White survey the countryside with rifles in their hands. Threatening, or being threatened? Where do they come from? And why are they there? This film synthesizes the spirit of the work of Catherine Baÿ and her team, which began en 2002 based around the character of Snow White. Throughout the video, the artist refines and perpetuates her plastic approach of a world, where the character of Snow White is set free from her icon past to conquer again our imaginations. About fifteen performances were already presented between Paris (Cartier Foundation), Berlin (Podewil), Milan (Uovo Festival), Moscow Festival Kliazma), Lausanne Arsenic)...which joined together a hundred interpreters of all nationalities, thus, creating a vast worldwide network.

EDOUARD SALIER

EMPIRE

– 2005 / 00:03:20'
EMPIRE

The Pax Americana guarantees tranquility, ensures comfort, and grants prosperity, in other words, an idyllic postcard of a new Empire. Archives images compiled by Salier demonstrates the blissful consumers of the American standard family, which become deformed by their transparent backdrops. Little by little, these transparent forms become more obvious, more readable, then, slowly one makes out military vehicles.
Empire is a graphic illustration of American way of life, and its warlike tendencies.

LA LICORNE

– 2005 / 00:07:00'
LA LICORNE

In a confined room enclosed with black walls, a light magnifies the body of a mythical animal, a white unicorn. A black rain begins to fall, the droplets thicken and hide gradually parts of the body of the animal to reveal a masquerade of wonder : the horn is only the accessory of a ridiculous dressing-up. This revelation shakes the foundation of the unicorn myth and on the flip side reveals it as an exposition of cheap junk.

DOWN-SLOW

– 1999 / 00:03:12'
DOWN-SLOW

A woman goes down a staircase her steps echoes the muffled sound of a submarine. She descends slowly, heavy, never-ending. That repetition traps us into an hypnotical circle.
A psycho-physical space which traduces an alienation, a frustration. Moving without getting anywhere ...
