"Watchers" by Virginie Yasssef - 1998/2002 / 2'10''
Virginie Yassef, the French video artist, was born in 1970 in Grasse, in France. In 2000, she obtained a diploma from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris. In 2006, she won the Residency program awarded by the AFAA de la ville de Paris, Location One in New York in the United States for a four-month stay.
Since 1998,Virginie Yassef has taken part in about eighty exhibitions in France, the USA, Brazil, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Japan, England, Bosnia Herzegovina, and in Croatia.
She takes a childish pleasure in uncovering the strange beauty of the world that surrounds us. In her videos, simple gestures appear burlesque and ordinary street scenes become poetic.
"Watchers" is a film based on footage shot during the 1998 World Soccer Game in Paris. Stolen images of birds hanging by dozens in trees, street lights, balconies and roof views of the square invaded by fans after every game, until the final victory.
There are no direct shots of the game but only of the surroundings in search of different points of view.
