"The Unicorn" by Maïder Fortuné - 2005 / 7'
(music by Xavier Klaine -Winter Family)Maïder Fortuné (born in 1973) lives and works in France. Her photography, video and graphic work concentrate on fiction revealed through her directing focus that cuts down the scenes to their bare essentials in which the aesthetic dimension is omnipresent. The body takes the place of the story, which oscillates between tale and mystery.
In a confined room enclosed with black walls, a light magnifies the body of a mythical animal, a white unicorn. A black rain begins to fall, the droplets thicken and hide gradually parts of the body of the animal to reveal a masquerade of wonder : the horn is only the accessory of a ridiculous dressing-up. This revelation shakes the foundation of the unicorn myth and on the flip side reveals it as an exposition of cheap junk.
