"Empire" by Edouard Salier - 2005 / 3'20''
(Édouard Salier, music Doctor L)
After graduating from graphic art and design studies in Paris, Edouard Salier started working with the composer and music producer Doctor L, designing his record sleeves and directing his first music video, "Mountains".
Prolific with images, he has created a wide range of graphic works, including short films, promos, TV inserts, installations and Vjing. In 2005, his short films "Empire" and
"Flesh" started touring around the world (Venice, Sundance, Paris, London, NewYork, Toronto, Hamburg, Seoul). He won several awards at these festivals.
The Pax Americana guarantees tranquility, ensures comfort, and grants prosperity, in other words, an idyllic postcard of a new Empire. Archives images compiled by Salier demonstrates the blissful consumers of the American standard family, which become deformed by their transparent backdrops. Little by little, these transparent forms become more obvious, more readable, then, slowly one makes out military vehicles.
Empire is a graphic illustration of American way of life, and its warlike tendencies.
