"Efforts" (Decathlon) by Antoine Leroux-Dhuys - 2007 / 14'
Antoine Leroux-Dhuys, a French video and graphic artist, was born in 1964 in Antony, outside Paris, France. He graduated from ESAG in 1988, and then he undertook a thesis that he finished in the same school. He graduated major of his year and he immediately decided to become independent by creating his own structure, the studio "Autrement Le Design-ALD".
He very soon acquired an international notoriety thanks to his inventivity and to his exemplary and personal feel for design, in particular with one of his first projects for the design of a record by Ray Charles. There followed projects for a multitude of French singers, including Juliette Gréco, Serge Gainsbourg, Alain Souchon, Jean-Louis Aubert, Raphael, Keren Ann, les Rita Mitsouko etc. Etc.
Efforts has a simple concept: "to reverse what the audience sees and to make us see what the athletes look at, what they feel at the moment of their effort. To express this inner sensory universe, I chose to equip an athlete with a small camera fixed at eye level - a subjective camera.
This technique, with the athlete's physical limits and the material, gives a mirror effect of the performance itself. A one time shot. In case of a failure, the project could collapse. The athlete and I were bound to the success of the experience."
